Soft Furnishings

Soft wholesale furnishings are what keep the harder wholesale furniture so comfy and liveable. A hard bench, for example, is much more comfortable and attractive if it is covered with padding and a pair of cushions. Similarly the windows can be gussied up by hanging up a pair of beautiful curtains. It can be said that soft wholesale furniture are among the most important of all the decorative accessories. After the large pieces of furniture themselves, soft furnishings are the first thing designers look for. It is also the easiest items to change in order to freshen up the look of the room. Objects such as cushions, table runners, throws, tassels and hanging ornaments soften the room and make it feel like a home.

Cushions

Contrary to popular belief decorators consider cushions to be one of the main focuses of a seating area or living room. There are many competing theories about the best way to arrange throw pillows on a sofa or chair. For example, an even number of cushions will impart a more traditional sense of symmetry. However many types of designers use the rule of odds which says that any arrangement will look better in odd numbers. Three or five cushions will give a more eclectic and modern feeling to the couch. Generally it is looks better to have a few larger cushions rather than dozens of tiny ones.

Table Runners

Table runners are narrow table clothes that run parallel to the longest side through the centre of a flat surface. They are excellent for ornamenting a table or cabinet without covering up the grain of the wood or whatever it is. Just like any other type of soft furnishing table runners come in many different styles each of which will lend a particular air to the room. A gilded and tasselled table runner give an elegant appearance reminiscent of a bygone era. But a whimsical striped or checked table runner fits right into a country cottage inspired look. There are so many types of table runners.

Throws

Throws do double duty as decorative items and warm blankets. Generally one sees throws tossed on the corners of couches and padded chairs. There they greatly compliment all of the cushions as well as the upholstery. They are also available for covering up when the sofa is in use, perhaps during a movie or while reading a novel. It is not advisable to arrange throws carefully in this manner because it will look contrived. Rather it is better to just toss them in the right place once and to let the nooks and crannies fall where they may. Failing that, try folding them nicely and storing them in large rectangular baskets.

Tassels

Tassels have a rich and interesting history which we will now go over briefly. The use of tassels on garments was recorded in the Old Testament. However it was in medieval -times when the French were responsible for their rise in popularity for interior decorating. By the Renaissance there was an established guild of "Passementiers" or tassel makers who had to endure a seven year long apprenticeship in order to make tassels. Up into the Victorian period these tassels were exported all over the world. Even today we use these elaborate cords to ornament cushions and drapery.

Hanging Ornaments

Hanging ornaments are one of the most overlooked form of soft furnishing. But when you have a scrap of leftover fabric and some stuffing it makes sense to sew it in the shape of a heart so you can try to sell it. Hanging ornaments are not just for Christmas trees, they can be dangled from any number of high points where they convey a sense of enchantment and wonder. Try hanging ornaments from a large houseplant, hat stand, rail or shelving unit. Multiple ornaments in a row will create a pattern that is very pleasing to the eye. The can also be scattered strategically around the room.
